Policy Perspectives on Transforming Engineering Education through Innovative Pedagogies and Strategies

Overview
Engineers play a pivotal role in infrastructure development, innovation, and economic growth. It is therefore critical to invest in developing a strong engineering workforce to drive sustainable development. This session discusses the landscape of transforming engineering education practices, with a focus on innovative pedagogies and strategies to promote the development of engineers and encourage entrepreneurship within the context of sustainability.

This session discusses policy perspectives on:

  • The priority competencies for engineering skills development in the engineering skills career pathway and Global Engineering Competency Taxonomy include:
  • A harmonized approach to developing engineering skills and recognizing educational and mobility requirements
  • Global competencies
  • The use of AI in education
  • Sustainability and culturally relevant pedagogical approaches
  • Rethinking continuing professional development and micro-credentials
  • The art and science of instruction in the modern age.

  1. Welcome and Introduction – Prof. Hans Hoyer 
  2. Keynote: Prof. Yashin Brijmohan Overview of innovative pedagogies from a global perspective, highlighting sustainability, the need for contextual awareness, research, and harmonization of Engineering Competencies (15min)
  3. Panel Discussion (60 min)

    i. Prof. Jamie Gurganus, University of Maryland, Baltimore
    Focus area: The development of global competencies and the need for a global engineering competency taxonomy

    ii. Prof. Ibukun Osunbunmi, Assistant Research Professor, Penn State University
    Focus area: Policy perspectives on the use of AI in engineering education

    iii. Prof. Didier Nyembwe, Head of Department, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, Cape Peninsular University of Technology
    Focus Area: Regulatory Frameworks for Continuing Professional Development and evolution of non-degree credentials

    iv. Prof. Dawn Bonfield, President of the Commonwealth Engineers Council, Professor of Practice, Engineering for Sustainable Development, King’s College London
    Focus area: Creating a holistic culture which creates and amplifies sustainability values and global responsibility: the importance of research and data
