Title: Critical thinking: What is it about and how to develop it among our students

Date: Wed Aug 23, 2023: 1:00 pm GMT (6:30 pm IST, 9:00 am EDT)

Abstract: According to different sources, critical thinking is one of the most important competencies required for students to master in preparation for success in the 21st Century. But do we professors know what it is about? Are we prepared to develop this competence among our students? Critical thinkers must possess and practice the ability to look at a problem from different perspectives. A critical thinking approach requires not going directly to the answer, but rather proposing it, testing it for reasonableness, and arriving at a conclusion based on the results of those tests. Such an approach can be described as “thinking like a scientist”, but it would be more accurate to say that all critical thinkers, including scientists, rely on methods that, while inspired by the development of modern science, are relevant to all aspects of life. “Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It requires rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem-solving abilities and a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism and sociocentrism.” (Paul R. and Elder L., “Critical Thinking: Concepts and Tools”) In this workshop, the speaker will explain the basics of critical thinking and will invite the participants to participate in some exercises that may serve as examples of how to develop this competency among their students.
