BRENT FELDER WEBINAR SERIES
Student Engagement in the Learning Process
Abstract
The term Student Engagement has been steadily gaining currency in the engineering education environment. Most faculty development programs focus on training instructors on how to incorporate active and cooperative learning activities in their classes. In the real-world however, the instructors have apprehensions, and claim that only a small class population is engaged in these activities. This webinar examines factors that thwart student engagement, and proposes strategies based on the relevant theoretical framework, for maximizing student engagement at the level of individual student and the entire class. Objectives: At the end of this one-hour webinar, the participants will be able to: 1) Define the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of student engagement. 2) Examine four main constraints that discourage instructors from implementing active learning in their classes. 3) Prepare students for self-engagement & collaboration. 4) Sift the class population according to their learning profile to maximize student engagement. 5) Evaluate strategies for engaging students as an entire class.
