Student Engagement in the Learning Process

Student Engagement in the Learning Process

The term Student Engagement has been steadily gaining currency in the engineering education environment. Most faculty development programs focus on training instructors on how to incorporate active and cooperative learning activities in their classes. In the real-world however, the instructors have apprehensions, and claim that only a small class population is engaged in these activities. This webinar examines factors that thwart student engagement, and proposes strategies based on the relevant theoretical framework, for maximizing student engagement at the level of individual student and the entire class. Objectives: At the end of this one-hour webinar, the participants will be able to: 1) Define the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of student engagement. 2) Examine four main constraints that discourage instructors from implementing active learning in their classes. 3) Prepare students for self-engagement & collaboration. 4) Sift the class population according to their learning profile to maximize student engagement. 5) Evaluate strategies for engaging students as an entire class.

Prof. Veena Kumar is currently faculty at the University of Maryland Global Campus and the Executive Director of the IUCEE international Educator Certification Program. Her areas of specialization are Education Technology, Communication & Faculty Training.
Veena has over 30 years’ experience of teaching, research and faculty development in France, India and USA. Before moving to USA, she was Professor and Head, Education Technology at IIT, Delhi (1988- 2003), where she was actively involved in the design and development of video courses (now made available as NPTL courses), and faculty training programs. Veena has extensive experience in the e-learning space, and worked as Chief Learning Officer with Microland Limited, Bangalore, India/USA (sabbatical assignment – 2000-2001). She has been the Principal Investigator for several prestigious academic & training projects sponsored by the World Bank; the European Commission, the Commonwealth of Learning, Canada MHRD, India & the British Council. She has trained faculty from China, Japan, Africa, Turkey, Brazil and India.
Veena has been associated with IUCEE since 2008, and has designed the IUCEE International Engineering Educator Certification Program(IIEECP). To date, 700 engineering faculty from over fifty engineering colleges in India have been certified. The program is recognized by IGIP (Society for Engineering Education), Austria for joint certification for their ‘Diploma in Engineering Pedagogy”.
