DESCRIPTION:Dear engineering education colleagues \nOur goal for SASEE2022 was to bring you\, our community\, together to engage about engineering research and practice. The past two years have seriously impacted how we work as engineering educators and our plan was to provide the space for us all to reconnect with each other in a stimulating environment. \nWe have heard from many of you over the past three weeks as you finalised your extended abstract submissions. Your message is that it may still be too soon to gather in person as a community in July. This concern has manifested itself in fewer than usual extended abstracts being submitted for review. \nWe have taken the very difficult decision to postpone our upcoming SASEE conference to the middle of 2023. \nWe want to thank all of you who have shown your commitment to engineering education in South Africa by submitting extended abstracts for consideration. Should you wish to withdraw your submission in order to submit to an alternative conference (such as SEFI in Barcelona in September\, or the WEEF conference in Cape Town at the end of the year)\, please feel free to do so. \nWe will publish a new call for papers for SASEE2023 in September 2022. \nWe are still committed to providing a space for engineering educators to engage with each other in July. We are currently planning an exciting series of free workshops to be held on Tuesday 12 July 2022 that will take place in a hybrid style at what we are calling location pods at various centres across the country. Should you wish to meet up with other members of the engineering education community in your area or any other province while also participating in the hybrid workshop\, you can gather at these location pods where streaming functionality will be provided. \nMore details about the 12 July 2022 workshop topics and the location pods will be communicated shortly. \nI know that you are as disappointed as we are about the changes that we have made to this year’s activities. Contributions can focus on your curriculum\, teaching\, learning and assessment practices\, or contextual factors that impact on these practices. She holds few more positions within her profession\, like the Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center at Benha University\, the CEO and the Co-founder of ASTF innovation Lab\, the ex-Head of Electrical Engineering Department at Benha University and the CEO of the Global Awqaf Research Center.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCecile Uwimana is an engineer by profession holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering\, she is a fellow member of the Institution Engineers Rwanda (IER). Since 2017\, through GCRF Africa Catalyst Program\, she is incubator supporting young graduate engineers to bridge the gaps between higher learning institutions and engineering industries by providing mentorship and internship program which links theory and practice to expand graduates’ skill sets and increase opportunities for employment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeborah Blaine is an associate professor in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at Stellenbosch University\, South Africa. She teaches undergraduate engineering classes in Strength of Materials and Materials Science\, and supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate research students. Debby’s disciplinary research area is powder metallurgy (PM)\, including sintered materials and additive manufacturing\, and the mechanical behaviour of materials.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrudy Morgan is the first African woman to be awarded a Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the first female Vice President of the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers. Trudy has over 20 years of experience of project based assignments\, successfully applying her engineering\, consulting and project management skills to a wide range of business problems enabling implementation of practical and cost effective solutions. It is addressed specifically through SDGs but is a cross-cutting issue through the other 16 goals. According to UN Women\, only 30 percent of researchers worldwide are women\, and only 35 percent of all students enrolled in STEM-related fields of study are women. Also\, recent studies have found that women in STEM fields publish less\, are paid less for their research\, and do not progress as far as men in their careers. STEM fields are a foundation to shaping our future: with digitalization and science playing a key role in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic\, ensuring gender equality in STEM has never been more vital. \nToday\, the pandemic is affecting women worldwide\, presenting a multitude of challenges in their everyday lives. DESCRIPTION:SASEE Good Practices Workshop 26 Feb 2021 \nDear engineering education colleagues \nAll of us have been working hard to continue to provide quality education to our students as we deal with the effect that the novel coronavirus has had on teaching and learning. We are now more than a year into the pandemic\, and about to start a new academic year. The South African Society for Engineering Education (SASEE) will be hosting an opportunity on 26 February at 14h00 for all of us to engage with what “good practice” means in this new hybrid “online” space. \nWe will start the event by briefly presenting the outcome of a recent SASEE-supported study that looked to understand the impact of the transition to “Emergency Remote Teaching” on the engineering education sector. Key challenges that have emerged from the survey undertaken across the sector are the level of staff burnout\, the difficulty of balancing work with parenting\, digital access and fluency\, low student engagement\, and a range of assessment challenges. \nWe have identified three of our colleagues who have found innovative ways to engage with these challenges and they will highlight how they have successfully managed to keep their students engaged while “online”. These real-life case studies will be followed by breakaway sessions\, facilitated by these presenters\, where we will be able to engage with each other about challenges we have faced as well as innovative ways that we may have found to overcome them. DESCRIPTION:Engineering programme providers (and programme accreditors) are increasingly focused on effective assessment of educational objectives at the qualification exit level. The Engineering Council of South Africa’s (ECSA’s) graduate attributes (GAs) or exit-level outcomes (ELOs) describe the competencies that graduates must acquire and demonstrate in order to enter the engineering profession and eventually register with ECSA as engineering professionals. Effective evaluation of these competencies requires innovative approaches to assessment of student work. \nThis workshop will untangle the confusion of what it means to assess GAs/ELOs. The rules of the game will be interrogated and practical examples\, that have weathered the scrutiny of ECSA accreditation teams\, will be drawn on throughout. Each participant will step through the entire process of developing an effective and targeted assessment\, from motivation to documentation\, that evaluates specific GAs/ELOs. SASEE brings people in South Africa and beyond together who have an interest in engineering education\, with the intention of fostering innovation and excellence in this field. The biennial conference is the primary SASEE forum for sharing\, networking and disseminating information. \nSASEE invites you to its fourth biennial conference\, hosted by CPUT in Cape Town.
